Freeman College of Management, Bucknell University

Howard I. Scott Professor of Practice in Social Entrepreneurship

The Freeman College of Management at Bucknell University invites applicants for the Howard I. Scott Professor of Practice in Social Entrepreneurship beginning in Fall 2022. The position will be filled by an outstanding candidate with a demonstrated record of excellence in undergraduate teaching, or exceptional promise of teaching, to a diverse student body, an intellectual curiosity for knowledge development and scholarship, and an ability to contribute to our evolving focus on entrepreneurship and social impact. The initial appointment is for three years, with the possibility of reappointment in subsequent years contingent on satisfactory performance.

The successful candidate will join the College's Management and Organizations Department (MORS) and will be responsible for teaching MGMT 101 (Introduction to Organization & Management). Management 101 is Bucknell's hallmark experiential and reflective management course, where students design and run social entrepreneurship ventures for a full semester. As students run their companies, they are exposed to theories, models, and concepts from the fields of organizational behavior, social entrepreneurship, and principles of management. They then engage in deep reflection through discussion, writing, and oral presentation about how they can redesign their personal behavior and the behavior in their companies to improve based on guidance from theoretical models and concepts. Major topics include community at work, strategy, responsible management, groupthink, decision processes, teambuilding, leadership, organizational structure, managing interdependencies, motivation, human resource management, cause mission definition, product design, financial stewardship and analysis, market research, and crisis management.

The successful candidate should possess a graduate degree in a relevant field for teaching MGMT 101, which relies heavily on organizational behavior, social entrepreneurship, and principles of management theory, frameworks, and concepts. In addition, a successful candidate is expected to enhance future development of the course by offering ideas of cutting-edge theories, frameworks, and concepts. Thus, we anticipate that a successful candidate will be well-grounded in academic and practical applications of organizational behavior, social entrepreneurship, and principles of management.

Additionally, candidates will be expected to advise students and facilitate student experiential learning and maintain faculty qualifications consistent with the AACSB accreditation standards for clinical faculty. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of, or potential for, engaging in ongoing professional activities, such as consulting or participation on boards related to their professional background. Some combination of experiences – holding a leadership position in an organization, founding a business, consulting to social businesses, and similar – could also be suitable for this position.

The unique nature of Management 101 requires that candidates for this position be enthusiastic about teaching with a team of professors and undergraduate teaching assistants and be capable of engaging in intense teaching in-the-moment on a regular basis. MGMT 101 incorporates values-driven management thinking so that students taking it have the opportunity to develop competence in thought directed toward organizational and societal challenges. The Freeman College is committed to embedding the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the curriculum of the College, and therefore, we are seeking a Professor of Practice who educates and studies topics directly linked to an array of SDGs. This position will be responsible for teaching two sections of MGMT 101 each term, coordinating course delivery with other professors who co-teach the class, and working with staff and student teaching assistants.

The approximately 700 undergraduate students in the AACSB-accredited Freeman College of Management may choose among eight highly interdisciplinary majors that combine courses in the various fields of management with offerings in the arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, and engineering. Our innovative curriculum and world-class teacher-scholars earned Freeman College a top 20 ranking in the 2022 Poets & Quants' annual survey of undergraduate business programs. We believe that an undergraduate education that combines technical skills and deep intellectual exploration is the best preparation for thoughtful and capable leaders. New faculty members must be capable of contributing to this mission through teaching, advising, scholarship, and service.

The MORS Department and the Freeman College are devoted to diversity and inclusion. We strive to recruit faculty members, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds who bring myriad viewpoints to our community, thereby facilitating the cultivation of curiosity, open-mindedness, humility, enlightened perspectives, and other valuable traits critical for learning and growth. We welcome candidates who demonstrate excellence in reflective multicultural and inclusive teaching practices and who display a strong commitment to collaboration and interdisciplinarity.
