  • 1.  Session: 1634: Power, Equity, and Justice in Community Philanthropy – How a Field is Changing

    Posted 08-01-2024 10:15

For all of you planning to attend AOM, here is a symposium to add to your calendar:

1634: Power, Equity, and Justice in Community Philanthropy – How a Field is Changing, happening Monday, August 12, 3.00 - 4.30 pm, Fairmount Hotel, Embassy Room

We have four papers that will shed light on equity, power, and justice from different angles and utilizing different methods. Panel members are Laurie Paarlberg, Lauren Dula, Yue Ming, Ellie Heng Qu, Jamie Levine Daniel, Megan LePere-Schloop, and Maham Ali, alongside our discussant Julie Langer

Sponsoring divisions are: PNP, DEI, and SIM

More info: This symposium leverages the context of community foundations (CFs), public charities that raise and distribute philanthropic funds in a defined geographic place to meet broad community needs, to examine how community foundations pursue change towards justice philanthropy in light of an environmental context that increasingly politicizes DEI. Specifically, papers in this panel conceptually explore the relationship between power and philanthropy, describe the institutional logics shaping justice philanthropy in community foundations, and empirically examine community foundation practice to advance social equity and justice.

    Hope you can join us!

    Marlene

Unfortunately I have a conflict at the time of your session.  Would you mind sharing the papers?

Arg! Your session starts 30 minutes before my flight out of town! As with Irene, it will be nice to see the papers plus follow up discussions for future publication. I'm currently collecting qualitative data about economic justice and philanthropy - this very subject! I will try to hunt you down at the PNP social to chat and learn where this conversation is going so I can plan my pubs about this (if PNP has a social).
