    Dear AOM Members,

We are putting together a presenter symposium on "HRM, Leadership, Well-being and Performance in the public sector" intended to be submitted to the Profit and Non-profit division at the 83rd Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in Boston, MA, August 3-8, 2023. We appreciate the opportunity to consider your related work for inclusion in our symposium.

For the proposed symposium we would like to invite papers that examine various aspects of the conference theme "putting the worker front and center". From an HRM perspective, Public Organizations have long been known for their relatively elaborate benefits schemes for public servants. In OECD countries, public organizations were therefore even often known as model employers. Consequently, in terms of the conference theme, HRM in public organizations took the stance of putting the worker at the center as the most important ingredient of well-functioning organizations. It is often said that public organizations, therefore, were not merely focused on the performance of public servants but also saw the well-being of public servants as an end in itself. Nowadays, due to various grand challenges and pressures, it has become harder for the public sector to remain the model employer. Moreover, also in developing countries, it is questioned whether this model employer status is indeed true. The symposium, therefore, seeks to explore the impact of these challenges on the well-being and performance of public servants. The topics for the panel are amongst others:

    • The changes and pressures due to digitalization on public personnel policies, leadership and the various indicators of public servants' well-being and performances.
    • The consequences of aging, labor shortages and employability for HR management and well-being and performance.
    • The role of HR management in societal goals such as sustainability, the creation of a resilient workforce
    • The justice, equity, diversity and inclusion goals of public personnel management.

Although these are some of the grand challenges seen today, they do not limit or exhaust the range of research questions that papers can address. If you are interested in sharing your work for the symposium, kindly submit 800-1000 words synopsis paper (introduction, conceptual framework, methods, and main findings) to a.suhail_1@tilburguniversity.edu by 18th December 2022. Please mention this in the subject paper for AOM Symposium 2023. We will inform the authors by the end of December 2022 if their paper will be included. Please note the deadline for AOM submission is January, 10th 2023.

Organizer: Rick Borst and Aneeqa Suhail.

    Kind Regards,
