One week left to start the new Centre for African Smart Public Value Governance webinar series on 'Administrative Traditions in African Countries'!

Together with scholars across the continent (Mogopodi LekorweCrisanto BarrosNana Yaa A. Gyamfi, Adeelah Kodabux, Amar SeeamMoustapha Mbengue, and Jess Auerbach Jahajeeah), we delve into the influences of Western Administrative Traditions and non-Western local traditions on the institutions of African bureaucracies. Through a series of webinars, we aim to uncover how these traditions shape the current administrative practices and impact the governance in Botswana, Cap Verde, Ghana, Mauritius, Senegal, and South Africa.

    Inaugural Speaker:

    B. Guy Peters (University of Pittsburgh, US)

    Topic:

To set the stage for future discussions, Prof. B. Guy Peters delves during the initial session into the concept of Administrative Traditions and explores how contemporary public administration is shaped by both its historical roots and modern ideas about the organization and functioning of public bureaucracy. This webinar posits that there are administrative traditions – such as the Anglo-American, Napoleonic, Germanic, and Scandinavian – dating back centuries that still influence administrative behavior today. Furthermore, it examines how the administrative traditions of colonial powers have shaped contemporary administrations in Africa and interact with local forms of governance. These discussions on traditions and persistence are also viewed in the context of the numerous efforts to reform and change public organizations.
