    PROFILING THE NONPROFIT SECTOR AT THE STATE OR COMMUNITY LEVEL:
    RESEARCH RESOURCES AND APPROACHES

    Saturday, Aug 12 2006 1:00PM - 4:00PM
    Hilton Atlanta in Crystal Ballroom B & E

    Organizer: Kirsten Gronbjerg; Indiana U.;
    Presenter: Kirsten Gronbjerg; Indiana U.;
    Presenter: Laurie E Paarlberg; San Francisco State U;
    Presenter: Richard Clerkin; North Carolina State U.;

    Using the Indiana nonprofit sector project as the point of departure, along with other regional efforts to profile the nonprofit sector, this PDW will review major nonprofit database listings (IRS exempt registration, nonprofit incorporations, yellow pages, local listings) and sources of data (IRS Form 990, Foundation Center Grants Listing, CEW/ES-202 employment reports, Economic Census, and special surveys). We will pay special attention to the advantages and disadvantages of each of these resources and approaches for analysis of the nonprofit sector at the state or community level. Participants are invited to bring their own ideas for research on the nonprofit sector.

    The workshop will be of interest to management faculty and other researchers concerned about understanding the scope and characteristics of the nonprofit sector at the state or regional level and those wishing to ground their teaching of nonprofit management courses in issues that resonate with the local nonprofit community and the experience of practitioner-oriented students. The workshop will also be of interest to nonprofit management programs interested in developing faculty expertise in nonprofit research and/or establishing linkages to local philanthropic institutions and nonprofit infra-structure organizations.

    Pre-registration: A technology fee of $25 and description of nonprofit sector research interest (1-2 pages) required BY JUNE 15. Please pay fee by check (in U.S. currency) to Kirsten Grønbjerg (SPEA 410, Indiana University, 1315 E. 10th Street; Bloomington, IN 47405; kgronbj@indiana.edu). The workshop will be cancelled and the check returned if there are not enough participants to cover the hotel technology fee.
