    Warning – shameless self-promotion follows.

We have just released a report on Indiana Nonprofits: Trends in Education, 1995-2009. Click to see the Press Release, a more detailed Summary or the full report. We hope to issue additional reports on other nonprofit industries later this summer. For a quick read, here are a few of our key findings:

    Overall education industry

    ·         Nonprofit employment in education increased by nearly 50 percent over the 1995-2009 period, faster than employment in other major nonprofit industries, such as health care (35 percent) and social assistance (44 percent) and double the rate of growth in governmental education establishments (up 25 percent over this same time period).

    ·         In 2001, the education industry surpassed membership organizations to become the second largest nonprofit industry (about 12 to 13 percent of all nonprofit employees). The number one industry, health care, accounted for over 50 percent of nonprofit workers.

    ·         Total nonprofit payroll in education grew by more than 70 percent over the same time period (adjusted for inflation), fueled mainly by growth in college and university payroll (up 66 percent from 1995 to 2009).

    ·         Nonprofit average annual wages in education increased by 15 percent between 1995 and 2009 (adjusted for inflation), outpacing growth in the social assistance (up 11 percent) and arts, entertainment, and recreation industries (up 7 percent).

    ·         Nonprofit and for-profit educational institutions are very different from one another. For-profit universities, junior colleges, and grade schools tend to be fewer and smaller; they also display greater volatility than their nonprofit peers.

    College and University Employment

    ·         Nonprofits employed about a third of college and university workers in Indiana. Overall, nonprofit employment in this sub-industry increased by 43 percent from 1995 to 2009, while government employment (i.e., in public universities) only increased 23 percent.

    ·         Average wages in nonprofit colleges and universities increased 16 percent (adjusted for inflation) while wages in public colleges and universities grew only 5 percent.

    Elementary and Secondary School Employment

    ·         Nonprofit employment in elementary and secondary schools grew 58 percent from 1995 to 2009, while government employment increased 24 percent.

    ·         In nonprofit elementary and secondary schools, the average annual wage increased 20 percent from 1995 to 2009, while average wages in public schools and institutions dropped 8 percent over the same time period (all adjusted for inflation).
