    23rd Annual Management Institute

     

    Human Services in Transition:  Sustaining Impact in a Changed Economy

     

    Dates: April 26-27, 2012

     

    Location: Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, San Diego, CA 92114

     

    The conference planning committee invites social work managers, faculty, students, and others involved in management of social work services to submit proposals for this upcoming conference.  A select number of presentations/papers will be accepted for the conference, which will feature a combination of plenary sessions, invited presentations, parallel panel sessions and workshops, and poster sessions.

     

    Proposals with the following foci are welcome:

     

    Practice focus

    A presentation that describes innovative or exemplary practices or programs in the community, in workplaces, in education institutions and the like. This may take the form of case studies, narratives, demonstrations or technical reports. Presenters are encouraged to describe the evidence base for their content. The outcomes of practice may be improved frameworks, concepts, understandings or structures, such as enhanced capacity through the development of skills, knowledge and operational effectiveness.

     

    Research focus

    A presentation reporting upon original research, based on the systematic collection and analysis of data or facts, including practice implications.

     

    Theory  focus

    A presentation, which is broad and generalizing in its emphasis, reflecting upon and systematically referenced against one or more bodies of literature or systems of thought, including implications for research or practice.

     

    Themes

    Authors of proposals are encouraged to address one or more of the following themes:  Social Entrepreneurship; Social Innovation; Use of Social Media; Management Transitions/Succession Planning; Financial Management; Building Collaborative Partnerships – from MOUs to Mergers/Acquisitions

     

    Proposal Types

     

    Individual 20-minute presentations (2-3 presentations per session)

    These will consist of a 20 minute presentation, which will be followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion. Proposals for individual presentations should include a 200-300 word abstract of the presentation, the author's name, e-mail address, contact phone number, and organizational affiliation. Individual 20-minute presentations will be grouped so that each session will include up to three individual presentations.

     

    75-Minute Panels

    Proposals are welcome for full panel sessions. Such proposals should include the theme of the panel, a 200 word abstract of the panel as a whole, the chair's name, e-mail address, contact phone number, and organizational affiliation. The names and contact information of all proposed presenters should be specified as well; and a 200 word abstract for each panelist's presentation included.

     

    Workshops

    Proposals are welcome for 75 minute workshops. A 200-300 word description of the workshop should specify the aim of the workshop and the practical skills it may teach, the techniques applied, the optimal number of participants, as well as equipment or teaching aids needed. Such proposals should include the facilitator's name, e-mail address, contact phone number, and organizational affiliation.

     

    Poster Presentations

    Proposals are welcome for day-long poster panels, with the authors present during assigned times to discuss their work.  A 200-word abstract  of the poster should specify the type of work to be shared and provide a description of the types of materials to be shown on the poster.  Proposals should also include the author's name, e-mail address, contact phone number, and organization affiliation.

     

    Submission of Proposals

    The deadline for submission of proposals is December 1, 2011. Send proposals via e-mail to: Dr. Tom Packard at tpackard@mail.sdsu.edu. Notification of acceptance will be made by January 15, 2012.

    Presenters are also encouraged to submit manuscripts to the journal Administration in Social Work, which we request be given first right of refusal for papers presented at the conference.  Information on submissions to Administration in Social Work can be found at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/waswauth.asp.
