Special Issue of the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory

Local Government Management

The Maxwell School of Syracuse University and the School of Public Affairs and Administration at the University of Kansas seek article proposals for a special issue of the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory on local government management.

We believe that local governments will lead in addressing the most pressing public policy issues of the future, yet less than 15% of JPART articles in the last ten years have been local government related.  Examples of possible article topics include, but are not limited to: The impact of devolution, privatization of local governments, shared services and cross sector partnerships, form of government, changing roles and responsibilities of local government managers, fiscal stress, climate change adaption, sustainability, and the special challenges of mega cities.  Our focus is domestic, international, and comparative. Research need not be US-focused.  Research syntheses that bring together and summarize a particular subset of local government research, particularly those that identify gaps in our knowledge, point out theoretical issues or problems, or provide a framework for future research, would also be welcome.

We are seeking both theoretical and empirical articles, particularly those on local government topics where research contributes to general knowledge and theories concerning public administration.  JPART accepts the full range of empirical methods practiced in the social sciences - including field-based observation, "thick description," case analysis, surveys, experimentation, historical analysis, economic analysis, and policy analysis.

Submission process and due dates

Abstracts should be submitted by February 1, 2012. Authors will be notified by February 30, 2012, whether their proposals have been selected for development as full-blown articles. The due date for final submissions is September 15, 2012. Articles will go through a standard blind peer review process as a requirement for publication in the special issue of Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory to appear in 2014.
