MPAC 2018: Adapting Public Service to an Age of Technological Change

Our trustees invite you to submit a proposal for the 2018 Midwest Public Affairs Conference (MPAC). Individual paper, panel, roundtable, and workshop proposals are welcome on all topics in public affairs; we actively encourage submissions from faculty, students, and practitioners.

Our theme seeks to understand the future of public service, one that will demand new forms of professional competence from its managers. Algorithmic mechanization, big data, blockchain, and machine learning are just a few of the innovations that will fundamentally reshape society in the years to come; MPAC 2018 invites attendees to consider the implications of disruptive technological change on public governance and management. By hosting conversations about the future of education and practice, we invite participants to explore a new paradigm of public service driven by developments in information technology. With Chicago's lovely summer providing the backdrop for this year's conference, MPAC 2018 will feature demonstrations of cutting edge developments in civic technology, data visualization, and data science from some of the city's top innovators. We invite you to join the faculty of the UIC College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs for what promises to be an engaging and eye-opening conference experience.

Our reviewers will accept proposals that entail research in progress, though they should have enough content to facilitate substantial participant discussion. Relevant papers may be asked to submit to a symposium by the conference's affiliated publication, Journal of Public and Nonprofit Affairs
