    The Arizona State University School of Public Affairs (http://spa.asu.edu) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the School of Public Affairs, associate or full professor (with tenure), with a term commencing not later than July 1, 2017.

     

    The School of Public Affairs consists of a multi-disciplinary world-class faculty dedicated to research and to improving student abilities to contribute to complex governance systems. The ASU School of Public Affairs offers a Master of Public Policy, Master of Public Administration, and Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy as well as Bachelor's degree programs in Public Service and Public Policy (PSPP) and Urban and Metropolitan Studies (UMS). The School's ranking is 13th in US News and World Report. It has particular strength in city management and urban policy (ranked 4th) information technology (ranked 5th), environmental policy (ranked 7th), nonprofit management (ranked 9th), public finance and public management (each ranked 11th), and public policy (ranked 22nd), demonstrating its success in combining administration and policy in research and teaching.

     

    Desired Qualifications:

     

    Accomplishment and innovation in administration, professional work, scholarship, and community engagement; commitment to diversity and student success; demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be able to work in and be committed to a multicultural academic and community environment.

     

    The Director's primary responsibilities are to:

     

    • Further develop the School's strategic direction;
    • Support and advance the University and College missions;
    • Carry out faculty hiring, promotion and tenure at the highest standards of excellence;
    • Foster a top-quality and innovative curriculum that is responsive to the needs of students, employers and the community;
    • Continually develop vibrant and productive relationships with the community;
    • Ensure that budgetary decision-making and execution are driven by principle, consultation, and accountability;
    • Cultivate and support faculty aspirations for external funding;
    • Advance the academic research profile of the School of Public Affairs at ASU, in the community, in the profession, nationally and internationally;
    • Encourage and enhance academic connections with other units in the College of Public Service and Community Solutions and across the University.

     

    ASU actively seeks diversity among applicants and promotes a diverse workforce. A Ph.D. in Public Administration, Public Policy, Economics, Political Science or an allied field is required. Present faculty rank of full professor is desirable, although associate professors, as well as academically qualified candidates not currently in a faculty position, will also be considered. 


    General Information about the School and ASU:

     

    The School of Public Affairs is one of four schools in the College of Public Service and Community Solutions (https://publicservice.asu.edu), a vibrant community of active scholars committed to excellence in education and innovative responses to collective problems. It is located at the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus, home to more than 10,000 students and close to many government and nonprofit partners. As part of the College, the School has actively pursued collaboration in research and academic programs. Joint degree programs are offered with Social Work, Criminology, Sustainability and Law, and others. The next Director will continue efforts to integrate the School into the broader fabric of Arizona State University, which includes numerous policy-related initiatives and innovative programs, and shape its strategic direction.

     

    Several centers associated with the School advance research and teaching on cutting-edge issues including the Center for Emergency Management and Homeland Security, the Center for Organization Research and Design, the Center for Policy Informatics, the Center for Science, Technology and Environment Studies, the Center for Social Cohesion, the Center for Urban Innovation, the Morrison Institute for Public Policy,  the Ramsey Executive Education Program, the Participatory Governance Initiative, and the Policy Informatics Network. In addition, the School is the home of the Alliance for Innovation (in partnership with the International City/County Management Association and The Innovation Groups), a national network of professionals, local governments, academics, and private sector partners serving innovative local governments.

     

    The Director joins the leadership team of the College of Public Service and Community Solutions, and reports to the Dean of the College of Public Service and Community Solutions. The Director collaborates closely with and is accountable to the School's faculty as well, and is responsible for leading the development and operation of the School. The Director of the School of Public Service and Community Solutions is appointed by the Executive Vice President and Provost of Arizona State University, acting upon the recommendation of the School's faculty and the Dean of the College of Public Programs. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.
