    Grand Valley State University (www.gvsu.edu) invites applications for
    the position of Dean of the College of Community and Public Service
    (CCPS).

    Grand Valley State University is a public comprehensive university with
    an enrollment of over 23,000 students on its two main campuses in
    Allendale and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Although it is less than 50
    years old, Grand Valley has experienced rapid growth and development and
    represents an academic community where change and improvement are vital
    parts of everyday life. The university supports active programs of
    scholarship, innovation, and outreach, and a philosophy that places a
    primary value on teaching in the tradition of a liberal education and
    encourages interdisciplinary collaborations. The university has been
    selected by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top masters
    degree-granting universities in the Midwest and by Princeton Review as a
    *best college.* Located close to Lake Michigan and set in the
    natural beauty of West Michigan, Grand Valley enjoys the advantages of
    being in one of the economically strongest and fastest growing areas of
    the state. West Michigan has a population of 1.1 million as a
    metropolitan region, supporting a dynamic business environment as well
    as a rich cultural life.

    The dean of the College of Community and Public Service is the academic
    officer for the college, responsible for its overall leadership.
    Reporting directly to the provost, the dean has oversight of a $7
    million budget and a growing tenured or tenure track faculty that
    currently numbers 54. Responsible for strategic planning,
    accreditation, and program development and evaluation, the dean is
    expected to extend the mission of the College to the community,
    profession, and to alumni of the College; to promote the development of
    quality classroom teaching and active scholarship; to increase the
    participation of a diverse population in the student body, faculty,
    staff, and external programs; and to foster and facilitate cordial and
    collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies.
    The college serves approximately 1500 undergraduates and 700 graduate
    students in the following academic degree programs: Criminal Justice -
    BA, BS, MS; Hospitality and Tourism Management - BA, BS; Legal Studies
    - BA, BS; Public Administration - BA, BS, MPA, MHA (Master of Health
    Administration); Social Work - BSW, MSW. The college includes an
    undergraduate advising center and houses the Dorothy A. Johnson Center
    for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership, a nationally known research
    and educational entity with 24 professional staff.

    The successful candidate will possess an appropriate terminal degree
    from an accredited institution in a field that is related to the
    disciplines of CCPS. Candidates must demonstrate: commitment to
    academic excellence and the ability to develop, articulate, and
    accomplish a constructive vision for the college in cooperation with
    faculty; a record of successful collaboration with community entities
    and interest groups; at least five years of full-time teaching
    experience in a four-year college or university, a strong record of
    scholarship commensurate with appointment at the rank of professor at
    Grand Valley; and at least five years of successful administrative
    experience in higher education or a discipline-related community
    setting. Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must, as
    are a commitment to diversity, a student-centered perspective, a
    collegial approach, support for shared governance, and meticulous and
    efficient resource management abilities.
