The PUPOL (Public and Political Leadership) international academic network aims to contribute to solutions and helps societies and their leaders address such challenges through research and scholarship focusing on the role of leaders and leadership in the public and political domains. Among other things, the network organises annual conferences to bring together scholars to present and discuss their work on leadership in the public domain.
The 2017 PUPOL conference team is proud to announce that next year's will take place in Milton Keynes, UK. The key theme for this conference is Leadership for Public and Social Value. Examining what leadership achieves for society, or segments of society, is a critical element of understanding political and public leadership. This conference invites papers which examine this theme, in terms of the public and social value outcomes of leadership.
Public and social value is important to conceptualise and understand because we live in a period of profound, fast and simultaneous changes in the economic, social, political, ecological, technological and organisational systems. In this context, there is an extraordinary moment of opportunity for leadership scholarship and practice.
We invite papers, workshops and symposia on topics relevant to the theme, including (but not limited to):
· Global challenges for the public and political domains (e.g. migration, safety, climate change) and the role of leadership
· The role of leadership in (co)creating public and social value and in addressing wicked problems, on an international, national, regional or local level and in different policy domains (e.g. policing, welfare, economic development)
· Negative leadership (e.g. destructive, abusive or toxic leadership) and how this diminishes public and social value
· Original methodological perspectives and comparative studies in researching leadership outcomes
· Processes and outcomes of leadership at societal, inter and intra-organizational, group and/or individual levels on key societal functions (e.g. democratic practices, policy-making, public services, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, auditing and monitoring, communication)
· Leadership, cultures and public and social value
· Power, politics and political astuteness in public and political leadership
· The public and social value of leadership development
Other papers on public and political leadership are also welcome, beyond the key theme.
